The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

Listed grade II. Early 19th Century lock keepers cottage built in connection with the Kennet and Avon Canal. Authorised 1794, built 1810. Had an 'S' tie bars at first floor level <1>. Cottage was destroyed by fire in 1989 <2 and 3>.

A watching brief of the site in 1995, however, <4> suggested that there were two buildings on the site that were destroyed by the fire - the 'lockhouse' and adjacent outhouse. A survey by the RCHME in 1986 <5> had dated the buildings as early 18th century, built prior to the construction of the canal, and being originally used as a mill or warehouse.
