Description

Wargrave passed from church to king (1194) and back to church (1199). The church then retained it until the 16th century. A market charter was obtained (1218) and with borough status, this may indicate the establishment of a new town (a process favoured by the Bishops of Winchester) <1>. The new town appears to have failed.
