Summary: | No 172 new street great torrington. Built of stone and cob, thatched, with roof of oak beams. During demolition two 'firebricks' made of 'cloam', were found which had been inserted on either side of a fireplace in an upper chamber. They were inscribed, including dates 1604, 1614; the inscriptions are reproduced. The bricks are thought to date the chimney but there were possible earlier features. It is possible that the owner added a cottage in 1614, as there did appear to be two dwellings with a common passage on to the street.(hooper). |
