Summary: | Much of this article is given over to family history. The castle was built by William and Mary Asthorpe who received a licence to crennelate in 1380-1381; the reason for its construction is uncertain. It was garrisoned by Parliament in 1642, and reduced by the Royalists; a bullet has been found embedded in the wall of the north central tower. Immediately before the civil war it was used as a prison. It was dismantled after the restoration. |
