Title:The Anglo-Saxon Charter of Ottery St Mary
Originator:Rose-Troup, F.
Date:1939
Summary:Probable site of the Battle of Wicganbeord in the year 851. Ottery has Wiggaton, or Wickiton. The site of the battle was probably near the hamlet in which is a farm called Burrow Hill upon which is a conical hill. Its steep sides suggest that it was artificially made, and appears to have had a cap of clay added to height it. It rises prominently from an undulating country almost at the foot of the steep slope of East Hill.
