Full description

Semi-collegiate hall, suppressed August 1334, by Edward III at the request of Oxford University. College gate of early 14th century date and part of old wall, situated at corner of Brasenose Lane and St Paul's St. {1}{2}{3}

First reference to Brasenose in 1559 (although it is a 13th century building) when repairs taking place. Old building pulled down in 1688 - sounds like open hall with central hearth. The gate which formerly stood more backward rebuilt on present site. In 1704 building rebuilt from old material. Change of use. In 1739 became workhouse. In 1822 demolished. {4}

Site and Gate scheduled. {5}

Floor tiles from college. {6}

A demolished wall was revealed in 1992, during an evaluation at Stamford School. The wall indicates that a masonry structure once stood at this location, with roof tiles found in association suggesting it was roofed structure, rather than a solitary wall. It has been interpreted as being part of Brasenose College or an ancilliary building. {7}

An undated, stone-lined well shaft was discovered in June 1995, during the construction of a car park on the site. It was recorded and then sealed with a concrete slab. {8}{9}{10}

Archaeological monitoring was undertaken in October 1995, during tree planting on the western part of the site in October 1995. Three tree holes were dug and a limestone wall, roughly 0.4m in width was observed. The limestone blocks were irregularly sized and roughly faced, and the wall had a rubble core. It appears to be of mainly dry stone construction. It is thought that this wall may represent part of the Brazenose College buildings, or it may be a garden feature. It is overlain by a dumped layer which is interpreted as a levelling layer for garden construction. {11}
