STEPCOTE HILL, STREET

View this record on the Archaeology Data Service web site

Description:The surface treatment of the lower section of Stepcote Hill (REN 1008) comprises a cobbled pavement with central gutter flanked by stepped ascents on each side. Pictorial sources show that this treatment has changed little since the early 19th century (Thomas 1995, 77; Gendall engraving), and, although clearly much repaired and replaced may well reflect a much older surfacing technique on this very steep hill (1 in 3); it is listed merely as ‘ancient’ (REN 1008). Slim clearance in the 1930s gravely reduced the stock of historic buildings on this street; many interesting glimpses are seen in the few drawings and photographs to survive (RENN 1729, 1864-7).
