HER 2559 DESCRIPTION:- A mound or 'steading' not a barrow, mistakenly identified by Grundy on the Winesbeorg of a Saxon charter (SMR 136). It measures 20 paces N-S by 15 paces W-E & is banked up to a height of 4ft (1.2m) on the slope.{1} This mound has been levelled. It stood on the largest of a series of natural terraces in the steeply-sloping hill- side above a small stream in a most unsuitable position for a barrow. Mrs O'Neil agreed that this was a natural feature.{2} GADARG agrees probably not a barrow - called 'Nicholas Barrel' - not an antiquity.{6} A rather amorphous mound under pasture. Not a barrow, but probably an earthwork indication of a DMV or deserted farm, as there are traces of the same type in the field.{7} Amorphous non-natural mound.{10} AREA ASSESSMENT :- No plough damage.{7} |
