Series of Linear Earthwork, within Cranham common.
County: Gloucestershire
District: STROUD
Parish: CRANHAM
NGR: SO 89 12
Monument Number: 3825
HER 3825 DESCRIPTION:-
A bank and ditch across Cranham Common. The bank varies 8 to 10ft (2.4m-3.0M) wide and rises to 0.3m max, above ground level, some 1 1/2-2ft (0.45m-0.6m) above a ditch, uniformly 4ft (1.2m) wide. The earthwork is superimposed on a hollowed N-S track immediately East of the "scissors" junction of tracks near its W end and is itself cut by tracks in several places.{Source Work 862.} Bank with ditch on N side runs across the common in a slightly curved alignment. Line of bank continued on Eeast by a field wall, but is lost on the W. The character of the earthwork suggests a medieval bank.{Source Work 1267.}
AREA ASSESSMENT :-
No plough damage{Source Work 1267.}

Unique Identifier: 1600476. (SO 81 SE 91) A curvilinear bank of uncertain date and function is visible as earthworks on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data and was mapped as part of the Severn Vale NMP project. Located on Cranham Common and centred at SO 89519 12740, the feature extends WSW-ESE across the common about 174 metres, being cut through by the road across the common. A ditch flanks both sides of the bank on its western most end. The features remain extant in aerial photographs taken in 2014. {Source Works 4249, 6880 & 14039.}
Unique Identifier: 1600478. Located on Cranham Common and centred at SO 89449 12771, the 2.5 metres wide ditch extends NW-SE across the common about 16 metres, being flanked on its northern side by an earthwork bank. The features remain extant in aerial photographs taken in 2014. {Source Works 4249, 6880 & 14039.}

A curvilinear ditch and bank of uncertain date and function is visible as earthworks on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data and was mapped as part of the Severn Vale NMP project. Located on Cranham Common and centred at SO 89568 12600, the feature extends E-W across the common about 361 metres from SO 89395 12632 to SO 89750 12621, being cut through it two places for paths across the common. The ditch is to the north and the bank to the south. The features remain extant in aerial photographs taken in 2014. {Source Works 3124, 4249, 6880 & 14039.}
Unique Identifier: 1600480. (SO 81 SE 94) Linear and curvilinear trackways of probable post-medieval date are visible as earthworks on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data and were mapped as part of the Severn Vale NMP project. Located on Cranham Common and centred at SO 89692 12804, most of the trackways are aligned roughly NW-SE and appear to connect cottages on one side of the common with the centre of the village on the other.
