Name:TOLL HOUSE in the Parish of Ivybridge

Summary

Toll house, turnpike. Vis=estimated -/-/1978 (hankin) situated on the n side of the exeter - plymouth road, east of ivybridge; on the w corner of the lane known as cole lane which leads to stowford and harford. Vis=although the toll-house was not destroyed until c.1931, no one has been found who can give a worthwhile description of the building. Shown on james green's plan, dated 1820, for the improvement of the exeter to plymouth turnpike. It seems certain, therefore, that the toll-house was put up by the first turnpike trust some time between 1758 and 1820 (hankin).
