Full description

Contemporary records state, "Block House Pillbox. Doddinghurst Rd, opp: Springfield Lane. Map ref. 040149". (Mil. Ed.) <1>

This pillbox stood on the E side of the Doddinghurst Road/Hatch Road junction, just inside the SW corner of a field. This position is by the NE corner of the triangular tract of land on which stood the wartime wireless station and the pillbox was sited to overlook open farm land and the approach road from the N. On the NW corner of the junction is a house, "Springfield" - thus the "Springfield Lane" reference. <2>

The site of the pillbox is marked by broken remains of concrete in the thicket at the roadside.
