Full description

Low, square motte with semi-circular bailey to the NE. On E side of motte are the remains of a flint keep possibly begun c.1136, destroyed 1212, with walls standing 2.5m high. A wide ditch surrounds the motte on the south and east sides; to the north and west it is landscaped <1>.
The Gatehouse, in Norman style, of stone and flint, was built in 1832. The remains of earthworks containing medieval pottery were found outside the nearby churchyard [12009] <5>.
The original earthworks may have been dug for Peter de Valognes, sheriff in 1086; his son, Roger, probably erected the masonry castle c.1136. It passed to Robert fitz Walker on his marriage at the end of the 12th century and was destroyed when he was outlawed in 1212. See <6> for the condition of the remains.
