Full description

The deer park is recorded in 1227, when the Tyttenhanger estate belonged to St Albans Abbey <1> - but according to <2, 3> the park at Tyttenhanger was created c.1427-28, a comparatively late foundation. Permission to empark 30 acres was the result of a dispute over the right of chase on Colney Heath; and in addition the abbot created a park of unknown size in the meadows and pastures adjacent to the manor house [6213], which was also stocked with deer. Tenants were compensated for loss of land, allowing a meadow to be enclosed by a hedge and ditch. A survey compiled in 1500 for the abbey shows that by this date the park had expanded to cover 311 acres, and incorporated the manor house, stables, barns, moat and fishpond, and two woods, one named Perygrove 'lying next le park pale'. <2> sets out the conflicting clues to the extent of this park, which was shown on Dury & Andrews' map in 1766 but disappeared shortly afterwards (see [12765]). The 1766 map shows 'Park Gate' at the north-east end, and the 1838 tithe award names certain fields as 'Great Park Field', 'Little Park Field, and 'Old Park Ground', but these need not refer to the medieval park. A substantial boundary ditch excavated south of the house in 1999 may have carried the medieval park pale, although the full extent is unclear; see the map in <3>.
