Summary

Iron Age settlement at Ancaster.

Grid Reference:SK 982 435
Map Sheet:SK94SE
Parish:ANCASTER, SOUTH KESTEVEN, LINCOLNSHIRE

Full description

Excavations in the Roman town revealed that it overlay an Iron Age settlement. The material from pits and gullies is, however, of considerable importance, including Gallo-Belgic imports, Coritanian coins, large quantities of fine Iron Age ware, as well as earlier Iron Age vessels. The extent of the settlement is imperfectly known, but it appears at present to lie mainly on the west side of the area occupied in the Roman period. Excavations at the south-west corner of the town revealed Iron Age material, perhaps earlier than the other. {1}{2}{3}{4}
