Full description

PRN 34376
A Prehistoric site with late Bronze Age pottery and some late Bronze Age or early Iron Age types along with sparse burnt stone, bone and flints. {1}{2}
During evaluation and excavation work as part of the Fenland Management Project, late Bronze Age to middle Iron Age features were recorded. Two enclosure ditches were recorded, one of Iron Age date, the other of late Bronze Age/early Iron Age date and containing evidence of saltworking in the earliest levels. Briquetage was recovered from several Iron Age contexts, but was thought to be redeposited. A series of superimposed ring ditches revealed six phases and a remodelling from 10m to 13m in diameter. Pottery recovered was mainly middle to late Iron Age scored ware, although no diagnostic late Iron Age types were found. A pit surrounded by stakeholes was found almost central to the 13m ring ditch, but was not stratigraphically linked. Given the site's location within the Hoe Hills barrow cemetery area (PRN 32927) and the multi-period use of the settlement site (see PRNs 34377 and 36437), it is possible that some of the square ditched features in the cemetery area may be Iron Age barrows.{3}
