Full description

PRN 34966
During trial trenching in 1996, a partial inhumation and late second to early third century pottery were recorded. The inhumation was aligned east/west and was presumed to be christian. A north-west/south-east aligned gully was undated in itself but second to third century were recovered from the soil horizon above the uppermost gully fill, hinting at an early Roman date (or earlier).{1}{2}
A watching brief in 1997 recorded an east/west aligned ditch dated to the third century. This ditch is thought to be contemporary with the droveway which runs east/west to the south of the site, but not directly associated with it. It is instead thought to be a drainage ditch or field boundary.{3}{4}
A watching brief in 1997 recorded a north-west/south-east aligned ditch containing two sherds of Romano-British pottery, one of which was dated 120-160 AD.{5}{6}
