The possible route of part of a Roman road at Rand shown on the OS 1:10000 series map. {1}

This is part of the Lincoln to Burgh le Marsh route as identified by Margary. It stands 0.6m high and 250m long as mapped. {2}

The most plausibly suggested alignment of the Roman road from Lincoln to Burgh le Marsh (Margary 27) passes across the north part of the parish. An earthwork bank, now levelled, lying immediately east of the village remains is shown on OS sheets as its agger. There is no support for this identification from adjacent field names and available aerial photographs do not allow a firm judgement. It may nevertheless be that the placename 'Rand' reflects the settlement's location on the edge or rim (Old English 'rand') of this road or alludes to what emerges as a later dialect sense to the strip of land sandwiched between the road and the stream to its north. {3}
