Full description

A preceptory of the Knights Templars was founded in the 12th century (during King Stephen's reign) at Eagle. It was established as a hospital for sick and aged members of the order. After the suppression of the order in 1312 the preceptory passed to the Knights Hospitallers. It was dissolved in 1540. Extensive earthwork remains survive. The present Eagle Hall (PRN 61029) is an 18th century farmhouse but the stone barn at SK 86466576 may be a 16th century construction. {1}
Scheduled 20/04/1994: SAM 22620. For a detailed history and description see the scheduling document. {6}

During a watching brief which passed through part of the preceptory area, no archaeological features were seen. It is suggested that this area was a garden or orchard. {13}{14}
