Full description

PRN 61954
Slightly to the north of Mareham Lane a small oval pit was recorded during a watching brief. The pit contained the remains of an adult cremation burial. The human bone had been placed in a pit and was poorly preserved. The burial contained a single adult of unidentified sex and exhibited no manifestations of disease. The deposit also produced over one hundred iron nails. The iron nails divided into two groups, the largest group characterised by square shanks and irregular heads, with the smaller group having shorter shanks and irregular heads. These appear to be structural nails, possibly from a bier or coffin.The fill of the pit produced a few sherds of Nene Valley colour coated pottery which date to the 3rd century.{1}{2}
