Full description

(N.B. The majority of Kirmington Airport lies outside of the county boundary, within the North Lincolnshire Unitary Authority. However, a small part of the original RAF base lies within the Brocklesby Park Estate).
RAF Kirmington was established in 1942 as a heavy bomber station in No.1 Group, home to 166 squadron. Operations ceased in at the end of the war and the airfield fell into disrepair. The airfield reopened in the 1970s as Lincolnshire (Kirmington) Airport. {1}

An archaeological survey was undertaken on lands forming part of the Brocklesby Estate, comprising field observation and rapid fieldwalking (on a non-collecting basis) and a desk-top assessment. This was done to appraise the archaeological resource of the estate as part of a wider Heritage Landscape Management Plan. RAF Kirmington was a dispersed airfield, with a number of camps around Kirmington village and on the edge of Brocklesby Park. Three dispersed camps occur within the survey area, although only one of these falls within the county boundary (at c.TA 1155 1080). The remains represent ten buildings, with conditions ranging from concrete platforms to complete underground Stanton type shelters. {2}
