Full description

Romano-British features suggesting agricultural activity, including numerous boundary ditches and enclosures, have been found during several archaeological investigations in the area of The Hoplands, the former Dalgety Warehouse site and the fields to the north-east. It seems likely that these features represent traces of a field system related to the roadside settlement to the west (PRN 60584). The area of the settlement appears to have expanded over time, taking over land which had previously been used for agriculture. It also seems as if the later Roman cemetery (PRN 64441) may have been founded on former agricultural land. Finds recovered from these features include late Iron Age/early Roman period pottery, as well as bones from cattle, sheep/goats and pigs. The full extent of these features is unknown, and they may extend further than shown on mapinfo. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8}

During geophysical survey at The Hoplands in November 1996, dense anomalies along the alignment of the Roman road were identified in the south west of the site. They were interpreted as possibly relating to the Roman field system. {9}{10}

A north east to south west aligned co-axial field system which probably dates from the late Iron Age to early Roman periods was revealed during excavation at the former Hoplands Buisiness Cnetre, Boston Road, Sleaford. {11}{12}
