Full description

Stow is first mentioned in the Domesday Book. Land there belonged to Gilbert de Gand and there was a minimum population of 21 sokemen and 14 bordars. A church (presumably PRN 60047) is also mentioned. {1}

The name 'Stow' is of Old English origin and means 'a place of assembly'. {2}

An important fair was held at Stow Green (see PRN 64872). {3}

The Lay Subsidy of 1334 lists the settlement's wealth as £2 0s 1d, below average for its wapentake (Aveland). {4}

The Diocesan Return of 1563 records 3 households resident in Stow. {5}

Stow is not mentioned in the 'Speculum Dioeceseos Lincolnsiensis' of the early 18th century. {6}

Stow is also not mentioned in the Table of Population for 1801-1901. {7}

White's 'Directory' of 1856 refers to Stow as 'consisting of four farms'. {8}

Earthwork remains of medieval settlement, including a toft, a building, boundaries and ridge and furrow, can be seen all around Stow Farm. A hollow way can be seen connecting the village with the chapel and fair site. {9}

The documentary history of Stow from the medieval period to the 19th century is recorded by Cragg. {10}
