Full description

Monument constructed to commemorate Viscount Alford, and thought to date from about 1852. It is of ashlar stone, and is inscribed in Roman capitals on the south side, "Vale! Mi Fili Dilectissime Has Inter Arbores Feliciore Olim Auspicio Tuo Nomini Consecretas Contra Votum Flens Hoc Posui Pater Infelix". The monument was erected by Viscount Alford's father. The inscription is believed to translate as "Farewell, my dearest son. Among these trees, once fortunate in aspect, I, your weeping father, place this here, offered in your name with a prayer". Newspapers at the time reported Viscount Alford had suffered from illness for several years. He had apparently gone to warmer climates for the winter, but was still sick when he returned, and died the following winter after two weeks of declining health. The monument is believed to have been located in a place where Viscount Alford had enjoyed hunting. {2}
