Full description

Grade II listed school with attached Schoolmaster's house, now two houses, dating from 1845 and enlarged in 1892. It is red brick with limestone ashlar dressings and has slate roofs with steeply pitched stone coped gables with kneelers and finials. White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the Free School in Horbling was founded by Edward Brown, Esq. in 1691. The school building was erected by the Rev. Edward Brown in 1845. {2}

The school and schoolmaster's house can both be seen on the 1889 and 1904 OS maps of the village. The 1889 map has the building labelled 'Brown's Free School'. {3}{4}

A new school for Horbling was built in 1957 to ease overcrowding and the old school was closed. {5}
