Full description

Locally known as the Danish encampment. A circular earthwork 56m in diameter and surrounded by a double fosse with an eastern extension on a lower level almost a parallelogram in length from the outer fosse and 46m in width. In a good state of preservation, being covered with grass. {1}

A circular enclosure surrounded by a double ditch. The interior is fairly level and free of weeds, but the ditches are overgrown with weeds, bushes and trees, including a number of fallen ones. The depth of the ditch varies from about 2.5m. There is a gap in the inner enclosure on the eastern side of 3.5m width, which continues and widens through the outer defences to the field beyond. A survey of the site was carried out in 1978 by a member of the South Lincolnshire Archaeological Unit.{2}

As described plus an air raid shelter, 2m by 5m in south-west part of the motte. {3}

Possibly residence of Turkil, the Dane during the reign of Canute 1016-10(?) who apportioned the Fens to the towns who held land abutting on to the Fens. {4}{5}

See Healey and Roffe for detailed description and history. {6}
