Full description

Earthworks with the appearence of a motte and bailey lie to the N of Bridgeford Street, East Bridgford, near the ferry. (1)
A flat topped mound surrounded by a ditch is visible at SK 68644339. Nothing resembling a bailey can be seen. (2)
At the base and NW of Castle Hill is a mound on a steep escarpment overlooking the Trent and Gunthorpe Bridge. To the SE of the mound, with a ridge joining it, is a bailey 50yds NW and SE and 25yds wide. The motte is 10ft above the level of the bailey. The ground falls away and forms a ditch all round the bailey. (3)
A natural promontory on the Trent escarpment, accentuated by an old field road. Now ploughed over. No earthworks were noted adjacent to the former ferry. (5)

Much of the site is overgrown and it is difficult to accurately define features. Southern part of the outer bailey ditch has been ploughed away although still visible. The motte is completely overgrown and a wheat field at the northern end obliterates any ditch. Another ditch appears to come in at the NW corner but is too overgrown to see clearly. (7)
