Full description

Lying just off the true course of the Ro road is what looks like a marching camp or early fort, situated at Hayton Castle, between Clayworth and Wheatley. (1)
Wide moat enclosing space 62 paces by 70 (SE-NW 70 paces). Site dry and no trace of stone or foundations. 3 carved stones set into brickwork of the Georgian farmhouse standing 600yds to S of site. White stones in the farm ground, and large cobbles in the manure pit. Traces of Ro road found in the field NE of the site when deep ploughing. Moat is double on the W side. Parish boundary is diverted round the side. (2)
The remains of a homestead moat and adjacent fishpond, both now dry. The N side is undetectable, in a field under crop, but the farmer believes that, prior to filling in, it followed the line of the parish boundary. There is some disturbance of the central island, but no definite evidence of a building. (3)
Claimed to be site of Hayton Castle of the family of de Hayton. No remains extant except part of the moat which was converted into a fishpond. (The modern house called "Hayton Castle" is said to be c 300yds from the ancient site and if the moated site is the true one the distance should be 500m). (4)
A rectangular moat cut by a farm track at the E end. The W and S sides of the moat survive as a bank and ditch, with a second moat on the W side. The N side is obscured by the boundary hedge; the E side is cut by a track and boundary hedge. The whole site is under pasture. (6)
Morph: 140.1.1 fishpond. (7)
