Full description

THE PRESENT STRUCTURE WAS BUILT IN THE EARLY 17TH CENTURY ON THE SITE OF AN EARLIER STRUCTURE TO WHICH THE LICENCE TO CRENELLATE OF 1344 PROBABLY RELATES. THE REMAINS CONSIST OF A RECTANGULAR BLOCK WITH CORNER TURRETS. THE WHOLE IS IN A POOR CONDITION WITH FURTHER POSSIBILITIES OF COLLAPSE. Form: Extant Structure (1)(2)
An article discussing the licences granted to crenellate in Yorkshire was included in Medieval Yorkshire in 2017. Slingsby Castle is listed in the gazeteer with the date of the licence as 28th January 1344 and re-licenced on 17th April 1474. (Davis, P) (3) Further information can be found on the website for the Gatehouse Gazeteer. The Jacobean house may contain remnants of the earlier licenced house. (Davis, P) (4)
Research by the Ryedale Vernacular Building Materials Research Group has found that the building stone used for Slingsby Castle were Late Jurassic Malton Oolite with some Birdsall Calcareous Grit and HildenleyLimestone. (Myerscough,R) (5)
