Full description

A MOATED PLATFORM WITH A WELL PRESERVED DRY DITCH. IN THE CENTRE THERE IS A RECTANGULAR MOUND WHICH MAY DESPITE ITS SHAPE BE A MOTTE AND MAY HAVE SUPPORTED A TOWER OR KEEP ; ROBBED ON W SIDE Form: Earthwork (11/1972). A LICENCE TO CRENELLATE WAS GRANTED IN 1336. (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(AP1-3)
An article discussing the licences granted to crenellate in Yorkshire was included in Medieval Yorkshire in 2017. Sigston Castle is listed in the gazeteer with the date of the licence as 10th February 1336. (Davis, P) (7) Further information can be found on the website for the Gatehouse Gazeteer. No traces of the building remain but the earthworks or foundations are visible. (Davis, P) (8)
