  • Description

    1) 'A very large circular mound which may or may not be artificial'. One theory is that it is a Norman castle mound. E Martin Aktins excavated the mound c.1852 and concluded that it is natural
    4) A large circular flat-topped mound c.10m high and much chalk digging around the base. Its position below the chalk scarp is unlikely for a castle mound, and it is probably just a chalk outlier. No ditch or rampart is apparent at the foot of the mound, and the top appears to be entirely natural
    5) Report of children playing on mound, using it as a slide and wearing deep groves in it
    6) Ancient Monuments Laboratory (English Heritage) surveyed top of hill, checking out possibility of AS church on site. Preliminary results do not indicate any anomalies beneath present surface
    9) See for detailed bibiography
    10) No description available for what appears to be a natural feature and probably should be de-scheduled
