Three-sided rectangular moated site. Max height from bottom of moat to top of platform is ca 2.25m. Interior may contain building foundations.

Description

1) Three-sided rectangular moated site at present under pasture and in good condition. Maximum height from bottom of moat to top of platform is c.2.25m.
2-3) Three-sided rectangular moated site. Max height from bottom of moat to top of platform is ca 2.25m. NW side demarcated by a hollow way. Interior may contain building foundations, revealed by differential grass growth. Under pasture and in good condition.
4) Previously unknown moated site reported by local informant has been examined and surveyed by R A Chambers for OAU. 3-sided moat with rectangular interior rasied about 1m above the bottom of the ditch in the inteior may reflect building foundations. Beyond the NE arm is a prominent external bank rising c.7-8' above bottom of moat, marking the SW side of the a larger rectangular enclosure surrounded by smaller ditches, with a mound in the east corner - perhaps a garden area.
5) Plan no longer in HER; has been transferred to Oxon History Centre; SVL, 2010.
6) OAU asked by DoE to investigate and excavate a small area (17x7.7m) within the scheduled moated site. Development was due to affect the S corner of the island, immediately to the NW of the building on the earthworks survey. A hand-dug trench failed to produce any archaeological remains, the topsoil being removed onto clean natural subsoil. The entire area to be developed was then machine stripped onto a clean surface with what appears to be modern cobbling at the SW end of the trench. The total absence of archaeological finds or features(except the cobbling) suggests the interior may well be empty.
7) Previous landscaping of garden where the proposed development is located had removed all archaeological deposits.
8) The newly discovered moated site was recommeded for scheduling c.1979
