  • Description

    1) A large square moated site, with two of the arms very deep. The area is 90m and 95m. On the 6", masonry is shown but not trace of it when visited.
    2) Moat around SW corner is very impressive and has probably been dug out for a cattle pond. 2-3m high. Along the SE side are clear traces of buildings, probably a hall complex, and at the angles and NE and NE side further building traces.
    3) SE of the church in a meadow called Court Close,. . . Is the site of the Audleys medieval castle, now destroyed. The castle was inclosed by a rectangular moat which may be on the site of an earlier R/B inclosure.
    4) Classified as moat for MPP because castle destroyed.
    5) The earthworks of this castle are in very good condition, although none of the features are more than c.1-2m in magnitude. The site and ditches were dry. Besides the earthworks shown on the 6" map there are features to the west also. There is a local tradition (told by one of the churchwardens) that the site was excavated "around c.1900".
    7) Best NMR photos from North Oxon survey:
    SP6025/8-9 - NMR 18541/18-9
    SP6025/10-4 - NMR 18614/03-7
    9) See DRF for new scheduling proposal.
    11) southern corner visible on Lidar and suggests extent beyond the scheduled area.
