Summary

Excavated by Leeds 1935-6 after discovery of a number of skeletons buried in great disorder. Single rampart and 2 ditches surrounding a central keep.

    • Description

    (1) Leeds thought this was the documented adulterine castle of 1144-5 but Bruce-Mitford and Jope argue a C13th date on basis of pottery evidence (digital copy).
    (2) Detailed excavation report (including plan) of site
    (7) Mention of further excavation providing more information of castle plan to that referred to in Antiquaries Journal (2)
    8) Fieldwalking around Folly Hill revealed 1 Roman and 3 Post Med sherds, as well as 3 pieces of worked flint. See Faringdon file in Parish files for limited details.
