Summary

Silts of a channel of probably pre-monastic date were observed during an archaeological watching brief.

Monument Type(s):

Description

The watching brief at this site located the edge of a palaeo-channel aligned south-west to north-west, its silts were culturally sterile. Comparison of the river bank heights suggest that the channel was probably pre-Monastic (1121) and comparable in date to the Phase 1a channel(s) recorded at the Abbey Wharf excavations on the opposite bank of the Kennet. The site was overlain by rubble from the demolished 19th century buildings previously on the site. No evidence was found of tanning on the site, despite being known as Tanners Mead or Tanhouse Mead by the early 1800s <1 and 2>.
