Description
Railway line from Shrewsbury to Wellington opened 1849 jointly by Shrewsbury and Birmingham Railway Co. (later G.W.R.) and Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Co. (later LNWR) with station at Wellington. Lines opened also in 1849 to Wolverhampton (S.B.R.C.) and Stafford (S.U.R.C.C) <1>

The Shrewsbury & Birmingham Railway (SBR) scheme was approved by Parliament in 1846. It was a revised version of one of two rival plans (thrown out by Parliament the year before) put forward by the Grand Junction Railway and the London & Birmingham Railway, which had since merged to become the London & North Western Railway (LNWR), henceforth the chief rival of the Shrewsbury & Birmingham. The line was only authorised between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton. The section into Birmingham was to be built by a separate company, the Stour Valley Railway Company, which was jointly controlled by the SBR, LNWR and Birmingham Canal Company. ->
-> The section of line between Shrewsbury and Wellington, which was double-tracked, was built jointly by the SBR and the Shropshire Union of Railways & Canals (SURC), who were building a line to Stafford [see PRN 08462]. The contractor working on this section was Thomas Brassey, who was the pre-eminent railway contractor of his day and who also worked on the Shrewsbury & Chester Railway. Stephenson also acted as consultant engineer to the SBR, and his pupil, William Baker, acted as engineer for both the SBR and the SURC. This section of line opened in June 1849. ->
-> The SBR became part of the Great Western Railway (GWR) in 1854, and the SURC came under the control of the London & North Western Railway. There was intense rivalry between these two major companies at the beginning of the 1850s, but a series of agreements led to successful track sharing on this stretch of line. <4>
