Description

A circular plateau, 125ft at the top, with low escarpment near Broadward Hall <1a>
A low, circular, glacial morainic mound, which on account of its local acceptance as a tumulus has been avoided by the plough. The result is a central area 40m in diameter by 1.6m high at centre, covered with rough pasture and bounded by a plough baulk, being isolated within a pasture field, thereby accentuating its barrow-like appearance. However, the natural slopes of the mound extend W and S beyond the published slopes for a further 10 to 15m as a gently-falling bumpy pasture . 100m to the E is a similar, lower glacial mound. OS FI 1973 <1>

Photographed from the air in March 2000. <3>

Photographed in the 2008 aerial photographic survey. <4><5>

As part of a programme of investigation of the Broadward Hoard [see PRN 00746], three sections were excavated across the enclosure ditch of this. A trench was also opened across the SE entrance and in the centre of the feature. ->

-> The south-eastern causeway or entrance was about 4m wide. A pit was discovered just inside the southern ditch terminal (context 3006). It extended beyond the excavated area
and its exact shape and dimensions are unknown. The part that was excavated had gently sloping sides and a concave base and was 25cm deep. It contained a single fill of rounded
gravel in a brown sandy-loam matrix. Within this was the lower part of a fired clay weight that had been placed upside down in the ground. ->

-> This raises the possibility that the site played a specialised role and might have been in use at about the time when weapons were buried beside the nearby spring. <6>
