Summary

A curious circular area in the middle of Edgton, which might represent the site of a medieval motte or ringwork (earthwork castles), though the area has been so disturbed by later development it is difficult to be sure.

Description

Among Miss Chitty's manuscripts is a note that P A Barker reported 21/xi/61, that there is probably a Ring-Motte N of Edgton Church, with an encircling road following the ditch. <1>

Evaluated for MPP in 1990-1: Medium score as one of 43 Motte castles; Medium score as one of 20 Ringworks <2>

A sub-circular area apx 50m across with encircling lanes in the centre of the long-established village of Edgton, close to the 13th century church of St Michael's. Evaluated as a possible motte castle in the MPP desk-based assessement phase. Earth and stone has been dumped downslope to the south in order to form a level platform from the bedrock which is apparent in the northern part of the area. Much of the area has been greatly disturbed by 19th and 20th century buildings. It is unclear whether the area is the site of a castle <3>
