Description
Mound, appears to be wholly artificial..perhaps sepulchral in origin, later adapted to military purposes <1a>
Postulated as a motte, with apparently a reference to its abandonment in 1172 <1b>
Also postulated as the site of a manor house <1c>
Hogg and King initially accepted it as a motte [<1d>] but later rejected it [<1e>], the 1172 reference having been found to apply to the place only, with no mention of a castle. A natural mound rising 5m above the surrounding ground.
There are no signs of a building on the mound. OS FI 1972 <1><1f>
The site consists of a rounded, drumlin - shaped summit and steep sides. No traces of other features. The site does not look like a motte and given the geological background of the area seems likely to be natural. I Burrow FI 1978 <2>
