Description

High Ercall Hall, set within a moated site west of the church, was built for Sir Francis Newport in 1608 by Walter Hancock. Facing a L-plan range is an arcade of four arches, today a garden feature but originally presumably an open loggia (cf. Condover Hall, another Hancock building) (N. Pevsner, Shropshire (1958), 149). In 1920 an ' ancient avenue' was noted, which framed the distant view of St. Mary' s church, Shrewsbury. <1>
