Description

The Della Porta site, 1926-7. Excavations for Della Porta s new department store (later Rackhams) in 1926-7, an expansion from earlier premises on Princess Street (no.5, see site 60122), encompassing 37 High Street and the properties either side of Phillip 's Passage, linking Princess Street at no.5 with the High Street frontage. 220 A number of separate reports concentrate on three particular discoveries within the site: a medieval sandstone building lying alongside Phillip s Passage mid-way between the frontages (mon.62425), a pit and wooden structure towards the High Street (60205), and a lined or revetted pit lying between the two (60206). Ground conditions appear to have varied across the site, the Shirehall peat deposit being contacted on the north-western side near the High Street (60205), while sand (though wet and running) was encountered in the centre and south, in the area of 62425; the site as a whole therefore helps fix the south-eastern limits of the Shirehall/High Street peat deposit and probable kettle-hole. See constituent sites for further details <1><2><3><4><5>

. Artefacts from the site remained in the possession of Mr A E Williams, the architect, and were presented by his widow to the Borough Museums in 1961. They included: a Sack bottle, which was full when found, two keys, two pewter cups lined with blue glass, and a chain for tethering goats or small animals <6>
