Description
A slight trace still remains of a mound known as the Roundabout. Recently ploughed out, it was quite a high mound with a ditch all round it. <1a><1b>
An irregular mound at the bottom of a valley measuring 90m NE/SW by 60m transversley, and about 2m high. It is now grass covered and appears to be natural; probably of glacial origin. OS FI 1972 <1c>
Viewed from a vantage point-looking down from the road which runs S of the site. It is definitely not a motte or castle, it is far too large, and round in profile. It is a natural glacial mound, which appears to have been used as an enclosure, because a ditch can be seen on the SW side of it. .. W Horton FI 1991 <2>
A 'ditched mound' close to an old railway cutting at Westwood was levelled and ploughed over between c.1905-11 and by 1977 only a curving bank c.3m wide, possibly natural remained. About 1905 it was suggested to be the site of a 'Saxon house, as it was formerly surrounded by a circular ditch'. By 1911 it had been 'levelled and ploughed by the previous tenant' but 'there seems little doubt that it was once the site of a fortified dwelling'. <4>
