Full description

SOU 852 (watching brief at Lansdowne House, Lansdowne Hill, Castle Lane in 1997):
[1]: A limestone wall footing (context 002) was found in Trench 1, in the south corner of the yard (see figure 2). It was only partly exposed, for a distance of 0.65m and to a depth of 0.25m. It was built of rough, unworked blocks. No dating evidence was found. It may be the remains of a structure within the castle bailey. Only modern deposits were uncovered, and natural deposits were not reached.

IP 13/8/04: Although the wall was only exposed for a short distance, it appears (on figure 2) to follow the alignment of the north side of Lansdowne Hill, a road that is shown on the 1846 map [2]. Speed's map published in 1611 [3] shows an apparently walled enclosure within the castle bailey in this area, and the SOU 852 wall could be the south wall of this enclosure.
