HER Number:00251/01
Type of record:Monument
Name:Sheffield Manor Lodge, 'The Manor'

Summary

Manor Lodge is first recorded as a hunting lodge within Sheffield deer park in the fifteenth century. The lodge was substantially enlarged in the sixteenth century and grew in importance until the 1650s, after which absent owners led to neglect. In 1708 Thomas Howard received consent to demolish the lodge, though this was evidently only partially completed.

    Full Description

<1> Remains of Manor Lodge, built c.1510, dismantled 1706. Turret House built 1574, still inhabited. Details of timber construction of 'The Long Gallery' can be found in 'The Development of English Building construction' 1906 p.83-4 ( C F Innocent). <11-15> Yearly excavations were conducted at the site between 1968 and 1980, directed by Sheffield Museum. The main ranges and both the inner and outer courtyards were investigated. Details of the predominantly 16th century structure were recorded, along with earlier phases. An 18th century pottery kiln was discovered within the northern tower (see PIN 4605).

<8> Evaluation trenching within the Inner Court South in 2008 identified substantial east-west walls thought to relate to the former manor house, which correspond with 16th century structures identified in earlier work by Sheffield Museum; foundations for later 18th and 19th century cottages [see PIN5467] were also identified. Excavation ceased at the upper level of these structures, as the fieldwork was designed to assess the implications of a proposed new access path.

<9> Excavations in the south range of the former manor house in 2009 revealed multiple phases of activity including possible 16th century cellars. Much of the finds relate to 18th century demolition and re occupation of the site [see PIN5467].

<10> Recording of the standing walls of the Long Gallery, Wolsey's Tower and the adjoining boundary wall in 2010 revealed remains dating from the 15th century onwards. The earliest feature identified was part of an early boundary wall, which pre-dates the major 16th century construction phase, that may relate to the suggested earlier hunting lodge on the site. Excavations within the Inner Court North of the former manor house revealed that the early 16th century redevelopment of Manor Lodge involved major preconstruction works, including stripping the footprint of the Long Gallery down to natural clay. After its construction, levels were restored to form a courtyard or garden. After the manor house fell out of use, the Long Gallery was re-used as workshops and, later, dwellings [see PIN5467], before these, too, were cleared.
