The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

Money makes reference to two separate finds of human skeletons near Shaw House, both of which he assigns to the Second Battle of Newbury. The first undated discovery was of skeletons and a cannon ball, but the second was in 1882 when new greenhouses were being erected on the north-east side of the terrace and yew tree hedge <1>.

Although Money felt 'there can be little doubt that these were the remains of soldiers who fell during the (Second Battle of Newbury) attack on the garden', it is also perhaps significant that there have been Roman discoveries in the area.

The GIS point for this findspot has been located on the site of greenhouses mapped on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey <4>
