Designations

  • Scheduled Monument 101: CHICHESTER CITY WALLS, THE TOWER, ORCHARD STREET

Summary

The Medieval town defences of Chichester are on the same line and incorporate those of the Roman and Saxon towns (see 4500, 4707). Grants of murage were made throughout the C12 to C15. In 1724 the walls and ramparts were again repaired and the walks on the N. and E. walls were levelled. The N., W. and S. gates were taken down in 1772-3 and the E in 1783. A stone pier marks the site of the W.. Several of the bastions have been proved to be on Roman foundations but only four are extant. In 1378 a new ditch was dug.{1}{2}{3} For the individual sites see 4777, 4784, 4787, 4789 (4)
