Records of archaeological sites, finds and industrial and listed buildings, including fieldwork reports, mapping and photographs.
To ensure all enquirers are familiar with the terms and conditions of the supply of SMR information, all requests for information need to be submitted on the form contained within the Access to the SMR document, or online at Gloucestershire SMR Access Policy and via post, fax and email from SMR staff.
All non-commercial enquiries from members of the public, students and researchers are free (although a small charge for photocopying is made on occasion according to the standard County Council rate). Requests for information from commercial archaeological units and other consultants are charged for at the rates set out in the ‘Access’ document. An hourly rate is charged per SMR search.
The majority of enquiries can be answered by post, email or fax, however, with prior arrangement, the SMR can accommodate visitors who wish to undertake research using SMR resources that cannot be sent to them. A dedicated, supervised work area with access to photocopying and printing facilities for researchers is available between 10am and 4pm.
Currently the SMR has a web page (Gloucestershire Sites and Monuments Record) with an online enquiry form (which can also be downloaded from the site), contact details and other useful information. Remote access to the SMR over the internet, and through terminals in schools and libraries, is planned.
95% of enquiries are answered using a Word ‘Summary Report’ from the SMR and a map printed from the GIS system showing the sites contained within the report. Where the number of sites returned by a search is large the summary report is replaced by a ‘List Report’ created in Excel. If the search can subsequently be refined, a summary report is sent.
