Full description

The manor of Penhallam is first recorded in the Domesday survey of 1086, when it was held by Richard Fitz-Turold from the Count. "Erneis held it before 1066, and paid tax for half a hectare; there were one and a half hectares there, however. Land for ten ploughs; six ploughs there. Six slaves, eight villagers and twenty two smallholders. Woodland 6 acres; pasture 1 league long and as wide. Formerly valued at 40 shillings; value now 30s. Nine cattle, two pigs, eighty sheep and twenty goats".
The manor was part of the honour of Cardinham, and remained with the Cardinham family, Richard's direct descendents, until the mid C13. Thereafter it passed to the Champernownes of Devon (b6, 95-97).
