Full description
The earliest building at Penhallam, of which there are substantial structural remains, is that on the east side of the courtyard. Beresford suggests that this building, with outside stair and fireplace, was a first floor apartment or camera, built in the late C12 (b6, 102, 120, 124). No artefact evidence to support this date was found, however, and no dateable architectural fragments (b6, 120). A camera would have been associated with a hall. It is suggested that this hall, for which no evidence was found, would have been earlier, and associated with the ringwork (b6, 99).
