Full description

The upper ward of Tintagel castle is built upon a crag overlooking the road into the castle, and is connected with rooms over the gatehouse. It is enclosed by a curtain wall close to the precipice on the western side which curves round the crag to the south and east. The floor of the ward appears to be of original rock and slopes steeply. At the lower, northern, end is a series of small rooms which had wooden - framed doorways dating from the late fourteenth or fifteenth century which may have been used as cells when the castle was in use as a prison (b8). The Upper Ward is clearly visible on aerial photographs (p5-8). The monument was included in the Schedule on 9/10/1981 and the scheduling updated on 18/11/1996.
