Full description

Many of the present remains visible on Tintagel Island apart from the medieval castle were excavated in the 1930s by Radford (h1). His interpretation of the remains was that the site represented a monastery of the early medieval period which developed from a cell and simple church built by the Celtic missionary saint, St Juliot c500 (b8). The remains of structures forming the alleged monastery, Radford's sites A - G, are comprised of grass covered banks 0.1m high, representing concealed walling occurring as single and multiple contiguous structures and were surveyed at 1:2500 by the OS in 1976 (h2). The site has now been re-interpreted by Thomas as a result of recent excavations and the reassessment of previous finds, and is now seen to represent the early medieval and medieval remains of occupation. Many of the structures interpreted by Radford as having been monastic are now thought to have been associated with the building of the castle (b15, b17). The monument was included in the Schedule on 9/10/1981 and the scheduling updated on 18/11/1996.
